Josue Castro

Josue Castro¹s fascination with the Prehispanic civilizations of Mexico has led him to his current expression of texture, color, and imagery. His works reflect not only the magic and philosophy of the long lost Zapoteca culture, but also the physical beauty of Oaxaca, the Mexican State in which they existed.

The combination of all these elements, the physical, the cultural, and the natural, bring to his art a sense of three dimensional color and design, which fits well into our modern world.

The mixed media technique used in these paintings incorporates acrylic blended with clay and powder. This creates a thick paste that is applied with hand-made spatulas to a treated wood surface. The paste is then carved, molded and etched before it dries. This process achieves a rough and primitive texture.

The figures in these paintings, some hidden, some not, represent people of knowledge. These shamans or guardian angels keep track of your acts and store them during your past and present lives for use in future journeys, represented in the paintings by windows, passages, and labrynths.

Josue Mejia earned a BA in Graphic Design at the University Iberoamericana in Mexico City and a BA in Fine Arts La Esmerelda, Mexico City. He also has an AA in Set Design from the University of Mexico. He is a painter and sculptor in San Diego, CA.
